ailfanning is a popular activity enjoyed by railroad enthusiasts around the world. Basically it consists of snapping pictures of these steel behemoths in action, and then sharing them with others who also have the bug.
Living in Des Moines, IA, the two principal railroads that pass through this area are the IAIS (Iowa Interstate) and the UP (Union Pacific). There are several kinds of industries in the Des Moines area that are served by rail, including a steel former, several grain silos, a large lumber distributor and a scrap yard. I'll be trying to catch images of these industries, as well as the railcars and engines that service them.
